RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM ACTION PLAN

Wendake, February 25, 2021 - Indigenous Tourism Quebec (ITQ) applauds today’s announcement by the honorable Caroline Proulx, Minister of Tourism, regarding the unveiling of a responsible and sustainable tourism action plan – a notable first for a government tourism plan. Having taken part in substantive discussions and brainstorming sessions about the action plan, ITQ reiterates its support to the Quebec government which is more mindful than ever about the contribution of tourism when it comes to local communities, respectful land use and the people that make up the industry.

Fundamentally, Indigenous people involved in tourism typically apply an integrated and community-based approach that takes into account environmental, economic and social aspects. Thanks to this action plan and its five proposed focus areas, Indigenous people will now be better supported in developing and promoting tourism that is beneficial and respectful in regard to our communities and businesses.

Indigenous Quebec is also thankful to be able to count on the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Sustainable Development Institute (FNQLSDI), whose mission is to offer First Nations a dynamic service hub that supports actions towards maintaining healthy territories and resources, developing sustainable communities and promoting the recognition of their rights. In close collaboration with them and other partners in the field, ITQ is fully engaged as a key player in the successful deployment of this action plan.
Already committed to sustainable development, ITQ—through its funding program to renew Quebec’s Indigenous tourism offer—is giving financial support to Indigenous tourism enterprises so that they can provide travellers with a quality tourism experience based on an integrated and community-based approach which takes into account environmental, economic and social aspects.
