Onikam means carrier in Atikamekw language. The cultural space not only integrates Atikamekw culture to the urban setting but also supports the goal of Coop Nitaskinan, an Indigenous solidarity cooperative since 2015, in contributing to the socio-economic and cultural development of First Nations.
Located in the heart of the city of Shawinigan, near Tapiskwan Sipi (Saint-Maurice River) in the extension of Saint-Maurice Park, Espace Culturel Onikam is a must-visit to discover and better understand Indigenous cultures, particularly that of the Atikamekw Nation which has a deep connection with Nitaskinan, its traditional territory.
Through a rich and diversified cultural program including various exhibitions featuring First Nations’ artists, workshops and training sessions, educational content and a documentation space, Espace Culturel Onikam provides an amazing insight into the Atikamekw culture, and more broadly, the Indigenous world. Visitors can participate in a number of free activities open to all.
