Waskapitan: Celebrating Indigenous Peoples
Waskapitan – Celebrating Indigenous Peoples
Presented each year on June 21 as part of National Indigenous Peoples Day, Waskapitan has established itself as the major June 21 gathering in the region, actively contributing to the visibility of living Indigenous cultures and fostering meaningful connections between peoples.
Led by the Centre d’amitié autochtone de Lanaudière, Waskapitan brings together thousands of people in the heart of downtown Joliette within an inclusive, accessible, and deeply human public space. In the Atikamekw language, Waskapitan means “let us come together,” an intention that guides the entire event by creating a vibrant space for encounter, dialogue, and recognition of contemporary Indigenous cultures.
Its immersive and dynamic programming features concerts and performances by artists from several Nations, cultural exchanges, cuisine inspired by Indigenous traditions, the presence of artisans, and participatory activities. Waskapitan offers an authentic experience deeply rooted in the Lanaudière territory.
